What is Facebook Timeline?

  • Radical new profile design
  • Changes profile from a list of recent updates to a complete summary of your entire life since birth including photos, videos, and all locations you’ve visited.  Awesome, yet a little creepy huh!?
  • Uses an algorithm to assess most important moments of your life which you can then edit.
  • You’ll have a 7 day grace period to decide what you would like to share on your timeline.  Yes, all of your old FB data will be present.  Remember those goofy status updates from college?  Get ready!

How to Get Facebook Timeline?

Step 1:  Click here

Step 2:  Click the “Get Timeline” button on the bottom right

What to Do Now?  7 Tips for you…

  1. Cover – appears above profile pic.  Don’t worry about the pic size…it will look “normal” once your publish your timeline.
  2. Views – see everything in one place.  This is where you’ll find your info, photos, likes etc
  3. Activity Log – view all of your posts and activity since you joined FB.  Only can access this
  4. Stories – this is your timeline.  Rediscover old memories by scrolling the dates on the right side
  5. Star, Hide, or Add – Hover over a story and click the (star) to expand it.  Or click the (pencil) to hide or delete the post.  Hover over the dots on your timeline to view them.
  6. 7 Day Grace Period – be sure to edit your timeline and privacy setting now.  They will see your old profile until you either “Publish” your timeline or after the 7 day grace period.
  7. View as a Friend – Click the drop down to the right of the activity log to view your timeline as another person.

    Good tips Nick
As with anything I guess we’ll get used to this feature. I think I’ll like the timeline as I’m thinking ahead from a marketing angle. I know some people that do some cool fan page graphic work and they plan to offer custom time line stuff. Thanks again for the tips, good stuff- Craig

Yeah it’s going to take a little bit to really get used to all of the new features but I’m sure it will all work out in the long run.

Nick you totally Rock! Thanks for this. Pulled up a friend’s Facebook page today and saw she was using timeline and it looked Rad but really wanted to know how to work that magic for my page too. So thanks!
Haven’t finished watching the video yet but am hoping that you’ll also include ways to maximize timeline’s potential for business!
    Thanks again and happy holidays!

Hello … Actually I hate the new timeline and would like to know how to get rid of it and go back to my old timeline. Can you post how to get rid of it if you don’t want it?

    Thanks.

Hey Joyce! FB is going to be moving to this and there hasn’t been any talk about going back to the old profile that I have heard of.

The pages with timeline that I’ve looked at are incredibly confusing to the eye.

The two columns with no common defined start and end point for beginning of posts means I’m skipping posts in the other if I follow 1 post + comments to the end.

Then I don’t know what I have seen and what I haven’t, so just follow the one column down and get lost because I’ve missed other related posts in the second column that added to the conversation.

I won’t be updating mine until I have to.

I agree Debbie – confusing. Every time I run into one my first impression is “I do NOT like this” and my second impression is “I’m behind the times!”

Thanks Nick – If we’re going to catch up you’ve given us great training!

I don’t understand why you would work so hard to provide a lovely page and not allow the consumer to have complete control over the time line at all times. The seven day grace period is a joke. I read about a consumer who upon requesting a copy of his information on FB everything from the beginning of “time”. They sent him a disk with 1,200 PDFs pages of information. The consumer has the right to limit what is seen. I don’t want to review a conversation or post I had three years ago. Ridiculousness. My daughter had a stalker. Now all that junk is going to be revisited and the situation was traumatic. Thanks for the eh lovely Christmas present.

Actually I think it’s pretty cool even though it is a reminiscent of the new MySpace. The new format is kind of like having all the pages of a website on one page. I think I can get used to this after looking at what my son did with his. Also, I expect my clients will love the fact that they have that nice wide banner space at the top to put a great header in.

    Hi Nick,
Great explanatory video. I have one question you might be able to help me out with.
I run timelines+ on my iPad, but with the screen in vertical, part of the page sits outside on the right, and also I cannot get the view to go into landscape mode.Yes the switch on the iPad is correctly set. Any suggestions?

      Hey Cornelius!

I haven’t seen that bug as of yet. I don’t think it’s a setting issue and it could just be something on the FB side that they will fix in time.

      Hope all is well,

      Nick

Why are my posts on my Friends’ pages not showing up on my Timeline? We used to be able to see posts made on others’ walls on our wall. I realize that our posts can now be seen under the “Activity”, but they are also suppose to be able to be seen on our Timeline. And, I’m noticing that only some of my posts are showing up in my Activity. The ones that do show, indicate that they are appearing on my Timeline, but that’s not the case either. So, thinking that my posts are showing up under my friends’ view of my Timeline, I go and view my Timeline as if I were one of my friends. Nope! That didn’t work either. So, on my Wall/Timeline, no one is seeing my posts on others’ walls. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance for any help with this.

This was a reply to my post on FB for an answer to my question. Thanks Carlos!

“Visibility of posts that you publish via your friends’ publishers are now controlled by your friends. Thus, if you want to retain control of your updates, you will want to post them on your own Wall and then share it with on specific friends’ Walls. Furthermore, if you publish something on someone else’s Wall, that person has the prerogative to delete the post that you place on his or her Wall at any time. If that post is not on your own Wall and that person deletes the post, you will not be able to retrieve that post if you don’t have a copy of it somewhere else. So, if you want something that you posted on your friend’s Wall to appear on your Timeline without anyone having the right to delete it, make sure you publish it on your own Wall.”

I changed to timeline last night. I have been on FB for 3 years and changed nothing before I switched to timeline. The activity log is showing nothing before the end of Jan 2012 even when I change the years and months. Nothing on my wall is showing and the more posts i write, the more posts it cuts off of the little was visible after i switched. I have reported this to FB 3 times in the last 24 hrs. No reponse other than the crap automated email they send back saying they got your report and can’t respond to each individual report. The only way I can see any of my old posts is to look on my cell and I can’t copy and paste them back onto my wall from my phone. (I tried). Timeline is the worst change FB has ever made. Me and my husbands courtship and marriage were chronicled on FB and now is somehow invisible. I requested an archive of my account to be sent to my email address. I got a message saying it would take some time but that I would receive an email when it is finished. I received nothing at all in over 6 hours, plus it is not giving me the option of trying to have it sent to me again. Any ideas on how to fix any of this ?
